Calpine is now one of the largest wholesale marketers of natural gas and geothermal power in the US. But last decade it was one of three large independent power producers (IPPs) to restructure under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to the credit constraints and plunging power prices that rocked the energy sector in the aftermath of Enron's collapse in 2001.
