The publication of the European Union directive on the promotion of electricity produced from renewable sources in September 2001 has led to an unprecendented level of interest in investment in renewable energy generation assets.

The directive sets out an overall target of doubling the proportion of renewable energy used for Europe’s energy supply to 12% by 2010. It also contains targets for individual member states, some of which require immediate investment to have any chance of reaching
