EC raids energy firms

EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes got tough on European energy companies last month, launching a string of dawn raids on firms suspected of violating competition law.

Regulators carried out surprise inspections on around 20 natural gas firms in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and Austria on May 16, and followed up with raids on German energy companies on May 29 and May 30. Officials were looking for evidence of price-fixing and other market abuses.
