Third option allows unbundling compromise

The European Parliament has finally agreed on and adopted the third package to liberalise energy markets, in negotiation since September 2007, by compromising on plans to separate the operation of gas pipelines and electricity networks from production - referred to as unbundling.

The compromise introduced a third option to the two approaches originally proposed by the Commission.

Initially, it said member states could either opt for full unbundling, requiring integrated energy companies to sell
