Lord Falconer, the UK secretary of state for constitutional affairs, recently stated that corruption “weakens democracies, harms economies, impedes sustainable development and can undermine respect for human rights by supporting corrupt governments, with widespread destabilising consequences”.

There is no doubt that bribery and corruption is a hot topic and that the energy sector has not escaped attention. Several companies have found themselves embroiled in the quagmire of corruption
