US proposes new air pollution rules

The Bush administration announced its long-awaited changes to air pollution guidelines in June, gaining a cautious welcome from the industry and criticism from environmental groups.

The changes were announced on June 13 by Christie Whitman, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the government’s environmental regulator. The EPA says the changes will increase energy efficiency and help reduce emissions by modifying a part of the Clean Air Act known as the New Source Review
