Stimulated by government incentives, the US ethanol market exploded in recent years. Last year, the US consumed over 300 million barrels of ethanol – more than triple the amount in 2005 – and overtook Brazil to become the world’s top ethanol exporter. The long ethanol boom has showered benefits on Midwestern farmers, mainly by propping up the market for corn, the primary feedstock for US ethanol production.
