Editor's letter: the smart grid reality

Global power demand is expected to double between now and 2030, while at the same time many countries have committed to lowering emissions. If these two seemingly contradictory forecasts are to be possible, it’s clear that much work needs to be done in terms of investing in power grids and energy efficiency around the globe.

To that end, the use of much-heralded ‘smart grids’ is expected to make a big contribution, making possible revolutionary changes to the way electricity demand is managed.
