Confusion over the future of energy trading firm Aquila’s weather derivatives desk is having serious ramifications for the development of the weather derivatives industry in many emerging markets around the world, including South Africa, Morocco and Mexico.

The future of the weather risk business at Missouri-based Aquila, once lauded as a weather risk pioneer, was undecided at press time. Officially, the company is looking for a partner to buy into its merchant services risk management
